Jan 19, 2009 – How are you celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

Posted by distinctivecoaching on January 19, 2009

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

I hope everyone is doing something special today, be it big or little, to support Martin Luther King Jr. Day and all that this holiday and Dr. King himself stands for in America’s history and future.

Today I was asked to be a guest speaker at networking lunch in February that looks to be a celebration of diversity and civil rights in its own right.  The group will be composed of mostly women entrepreneurs from many races and backgrounds.  Under the main topics of networking, marketing and sales, I am looking forward to speaking specifically on how to broaden your network, help others, foster cooperation and collaboration, and be of service to one another.  Growing your business and leading a happier, more fulfilling life will just be awesome side effects.

I think it’s going to be a fantastic event!  Even though I am doing this for exposure and business reasons, I do feel very good about the group attending.  Just knowing that this kind of assembly of a diverse group of people with common goals and aspirations is a cause for celebration, because there was a long time in history when this would not have been the norm, acceptable and in some cases even legal.

I am very thankful and grateful for people of all races, creeds and colors that fought for centuries for civil rights in our country and continue to do so.  I am privileged and appreciative that I live and work, both virtually and in person, in communities in which I am able to meet people from different backgrounds with different experiences, preferences, opinions and points of view.  I hope that future generations will have even more openness, trust and caring across borders that will lift the nation and the world as we grow together in this new century.

Please share your thoughts, musings, and anything at all on this topic.

And enjoy today’s holiday and tomorrow’s inauguration, and many more todays and tomorrows to come!

All the best,
Jason

Q: How can I use Twitter to draw business to my website?

Posted by distinctivecoaching on January 9, 2009

From the Facebook Discussion: “Who’s Using Twitter?”

Q: Jason, I have a question about Twitter. How can I use it to draw business to my website?

A: Great question.  There are several different ways to use Twitter for business.  Here are ten off the top of my head:

1.) Have conversations over Twitter by replying to other postings to build your network and relationships so people get to know you better – Type “@TheirTwitterName” at the beginning of the post to indicate who you are talking to, or click on the reply icon from their original post.

2.) Make announcements about your services, specials, etc.

3.) Provide helpful links to info, articles, blog posts, videos and other resources that are of interest to your target market.

4.) Ask others to “Re-tweet” important messages that you want to be spread “virally”.

5.) Use it synergistically with Facebook, LinkedIn, Ning, Meetup, etc.  When you connect to someone on one platform, see if they are on Twitter.  The more familiarity they get with you, the faster the relationship is built.

6.) Post questions that you have about anything at all.  If they have the answer, someone will generally try to help out.

7.) Announce networking events or ways to facilitate more in-person or virtual interaction.

8.) Give testimonials and recommendations to support your network.  I have done this when I had a great customer experience, and others have gotten business from it.

9.) Post some personal stuff once in a while, so people get to know not just your business, but you as well.

10.) Promote BizCoachJason and DistinctiveCoaching.com, because I rock :)   (Just kidding)

I have had people sign up for my E-Series and teleclasses from posts I’ve made, and others have retweeted for me on Twitter.

Just aim to share the love, and it will work well.

All the best,
Jason

Boiling it all down… Online marketing, Social networking, and Client attraction

Posted by distinctivecoaching on November 28, 2008

I have just read several blogs that deal with all these topics. Some were suggestions, some were rants, and others were just ideas to help others.

I am a huge believer in networking! I have written articles, given teleclasses and presented live seminars. And now I am benefitting from the social networking arena (mostly Facebook, Twitter, and Ning), where they can all come together.  So here is my take:

Successful online networking is not much different than in-person networking: Building your personal and business brand into a cohesive message and attractive experience.

The keys to great networking are to develop relationships by connecting, finding common ground, being service oriented, providing great value (resources, content, ideas or connections) so people can get to know you and at the same time enhance themselves/their business, and all the while expecting nothing in return.

This has always been my philosophy, and it has worked very well. You can read more here as well as listen in to a recorded teleclass I gave on the topic:

“10 Holiday Networking Tips”

Have a great holiday season!

Networking & The Holidays – Are you ready??

Posted by distinctivecoaching on November 22, 2008

Well… Here come the holidays, and in full force.

I don’t know about you, but my schedule is BUSY… jam-packed, full to the brim. There are networking events, association and club meetings, family gatherings, friends’ parties, Meetup’s, Facebook events, Evites… Oh my head!

This can be a very interesting time of the year for many businesses (and tough for some).  So much to do and so little time, lots of running around from this meeting to that event, back to work, downtown to run errands, to the mall for presents, back to that other event that I almost forgot about…

And if you’re an entrepreneur, small business owner or sales professional, your sales might slow down as people gear up for the holidays, unless you sell reindeer feed, like my uncle in Alaska.

All this can drain your energy, cause stress and send some of us straight to “Bah, Humbug!” land.  (Didn’t know that was a real place, did you?)

But, is that the kind of presence you want to have when you meet someone new at one of these many parties, networking events and meetings?  Are you going to let out a cry for mercy as someone new approaches you at the eggnog bowl and tries to “pitch you” their services while grabbing a mini pizza roll?

I know the feeling.  I’ve woken up late in the night and cried out for help and a break from all the holiday overload.  But then I discovered the “rules” of classy, stylish and easy networking . . . and how to rule all these holiday events instead of having them rule me.
(Yep.. you knew this was going somewhere!)

Well, here are “10 Holiday Networking Tips” that I want to share with you that I’ve found helpful.  They are especially useful during the holiday season to make connections that count, and they will help you keep your energy, sanity and holiday cheer. (And see below for even more direct assistance with this fun topic!)

1.) Make a good first impression
It counts OH SO MUCH!

2.) Be polite, respectful & honest
This is how you want to be treated, right?

3.) Maintain a “giving” mindset
Just like the holidays, successful networking is all about giving. It should be easy to remember this time of year, but it’s an important mindset to have all year round.

4.) Ask for their contact info
So you’ll be able to get in touch with them if you are interested in talking further.

5.) Don’t “sell” without permission
If you’re turned off by someone launches into a 5-minute sales presentation about their awesome pens that write underwater, in the dark and without gravity, don’t assume others are dying to hear about your slick wheel bearings, even if you KNOW that’s exactly what they need.  This is a very important step – maybe the most important of all. You do want to tell people what you do, but in a classy, stylish way that gets their attention…    (See below for more about this one)

6.) Avoid opening with “So, what do you do?”
It can kill rapport building before it begins and can condemn the interaction to being nothing more than boring, robotic and mindless chatter without exchanging the truly important information. If you open your conversations this way, you can miss an important opportunity to stand out from the rest of the crowd.

7.) Don’t rely on them to contact you
Just because they said they were thrilled to have met you and learned about your slick wheel bearings, doesn’t mean they will really call you.  They may have intended to at the time, but life happens and no one is perfect. So get their info so you can ensure the follow up.

8.) Always carry pen, paper & business cards
You never know when a great opportunity might present itself. Yes, even while you’re fighting for that last “Cosmic Raymond” action figure.

9.) Do not get out of a conversation by dumping them on someone else
Making another person suffer is no way to get a good reputation during the holidays. Kindly excuse yourself, tell them you need another drink, see someone you need to speak with, or even that you have to “go” really bad! And don’t get caught lying as that will kill all of your credibility really fast.

10.) Enjoy yourself!
Relax and have fun!  When you’re smiling and enjoying yourself, you are more likable to others, and this can lead to a lot of business. Be kind, considerate and magnetic!

SO… I hope these “10 Holiday Networking Tips” help you as you network your way through all the parties this season.

If you would like learn EXACTLY how to use these to transform your networking and social events into a Business Boosting Bonanza   - especially how to get great leads quickly without “selling” (number 5 above), being manipulative or dishonest, please sign up for next week’s

* * * FREE TELECLASS : http://NetworkingTheHolidays.eventbrite.com

“Network Your Way through the Holidays – With style, class and ease!”

This is going to be a very exciting session. This is one of my favorite topics, and I promise to show you how to use networking properly to send you business skyrocketing!

And there will be some INCREDIBLE FREE BONUSES given to attendees that you won’t want to miss. These will help you get ready for a blockbuster 2009, even in this challenging economy!

Lastly… If you’re in Chicago, check out the “FUN with REP” networking event on Dec 9 to put these techniques into practice. This is going to be a really fun networking and social event. A great way to gear up for the holidays!

In the meantime, I want to wish a very happy holiday season to you, your family, your business, and most of all your networking spirit!

All the best,
Jason

Q: A win-win situation in this economic climate?

Posted by distinctivecoaching on November 6, 2008

Are the current economic conditions effecting your marketing, sales and business revenue?  And just as important, are they effecting your mindset?

I believe it’s very important to not let the recession, down market, whatever you want to label it, get too much into your belief system about if people will spend money or not. Each customer is unique and everyone’s situation has hundreds of variables.

No matter what the economic climate is, any consumer is faced with a buying and spending decision at the moment of a sale. Great sales people will “coach the sale” — work with the prospect (not on, or against) to come to the best decision for the prospect. Make the interaction and decision-making process a real collaboration between the two of you.

This is a philosophy that I hold dear and teach to my clients as well. If you follow this mantra, and truly look out for your prospects’ wellbeing, you won’t make every sale, but you will get an outstanding reputation and lots of referrals, which will lead to even more customers and revenue. And that one that didn’t buy will be much more likely to revisit the opportunity later.

When you are selling, be an advocate for the potential client. Help them come to the best buying decision, and you will see less influence by the economy, better immediate results for your customers, and stronger long-term growth for yourself.

What tips, ideas, or suggestions do you have on the topic? Feel free to comment here and join the discussion on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=33103057507&topic=5894

Best,

Q: How do you expand your professional network?

Posted by distinctivecoaching on November 4, 2008

Join the discussion at http://tinyurl.com/65nm74

I borrowed this question from a LinkedIn group discussion board (http://snipurl.com/53kna).  Here is my posted answer:

I like the question as a way to start a good discussion.  Here are several actions that people can take to expand their professionals networks:

 - First, you have to be in the presence of someone – physically, virtually, etc.
 - You have to meet and connect with people
 - Go to networking events such as Linked n Chicago, BNC or Meetup http://www.meetup.com/ChicagoBusinessDevelopmentForum
 - Follow up with people you meet
 - Create relationships based on common interests, goals, causes, or philosophies
 - Join online groups (such as http://snipurl.com/4zcvf)
 - Introduce yourself both one-on-one and also to a group discussion board
 - Tell people about how you can help them
 - Be of service without expecting anything in return
 - Don’t just try to sell people. Networking isn’t about sales (but the sale will come if you do the other things)
 - In addition to offering help, also ask for it when you have a need; allow others to be of service to you and share their expertise.

There are many more ideas. These are some of the big ones that I help people plan out and execute when they are building their businesses.

What are some other thoughts from the group members?

Tip on “Next steps to keep action moving forward”

Posted by distinctivecoaching on October 16, 2008

Whether you are talking to a prospect, client, or partner, strive to keep the action plan and accountability in motion.

Always provide that person with what to expect next and when to expect it. And, ask questions so you know the same from them.
