A lot of people are asking whether it makes sense to continue marketing as usual when money is so tight and often sales are low, cut back to save money and help stay afloat, or even cut marketing out altogether.
My definition of being in business is: “Selling a product or service.” And my definition of marketing is: “Creating exposure for your business, product or service.”
So a simplistic answer is: If no one knows you have something to sell, no one will be able to buy.
Not only is marketing essential in this economic environment, it can also be done inexpensively and very often for free.
I work with my own entrepreneurial clients to build their businesses using marketing methods that are no cost, fun and motivating for them to execute, and extremely helpful to their target market. This also helps to build their brand and exposure. So even if some prospects are not ready to buy at the moment, the processes, systems and strategies are in place and moving to really take advantage when the economy turns around.
But even during the downturn, people are buying. It’s all a matter of delivering great value with your marketing and being able to easily and comfortably show a rock-solid return on investment – present and future.
The best marketing is free. And it will set up your sales for success now and explode even more down the road.
Happy marketing and enjoy the ride!

“Online Communication Tips For — Communicators”
It’s all about image, communication, relationships and style. Especially for us business owners. Remember that people are looking to you and will decide if they want to buy from you, do business with you, or network and help you connect with others.
Richard Laermer provides some very good points here about what you’re posting on Facebook, as well as how you are emailing to your audiece. Everything you communicate reflects on you and your brand.
“… By now, we’ve all received the message that our online reputations and images are as important, if not more important, than their off-the-Web counterparts.
So here’s how to rise from the ground floor to a higher level…”
Read more here:
http://badpitch.blogspot.com/2009/05/online-communication-tips-for.html
Jason’s additional comments:
This is very sound advice!
I would add that if you are writing marketing copy (webpage, newsletter, etc.) think of your audience as they are reading a note from you specifically to them specifically. At times it’s appropriate to write in a “personal” voice. The grammar doesn’t have to be perfect in these instances; it should sound “natural” and even a touch conversational. But it still needs to sound intelligent, respectful and thoughtful.
All the best,
Jason

Want to sell more? Get the buzz words, catch phrases & industry jargon out of your head. Talk to people in their own, everyday terms so they can relate both intellectually and emotionally.
While working on sales strategies with two different clients yesterday and today, both said to me, “Wow.. I need to unlearn what my company taught me. No wonder I’m not getting many appointments set.”
I’ve also heard this before from past clients. These can’t be coincidences.
These two particular companies are well known and respected ones – one of the oldest and best-known in the financial services and one very respected network marketing company. Both teach their sales staff very specific strategies and scripts filled with phrases that boast of the company’s successes, accolades, and awards but do very little to engage the prospect’s dreams, wants and desires. They don’t connect the dots from what the company offers to what’s in the prospect’s mind and heart.
So how do you connect those dots? Here are six quick tips…
- Ask questions. Don’t assume you know your prospect’s pain and pleasure points. Even if you guess correctly, they need to be in their own words, not yours.
- Make an active sales experience for your prospect, not passive.
- Create a sales conversation instead of a presentation.
- Help your prospect get clear on what they want, how it will positively impact them and the costs for not acting.
- Use check-in questions and assess the fit as you go.
- Leave the decision-making power with your prospect. Don’t try to be sly or force a sale on them. If you’ve done a good job at helping them connect the dots, the decision is up to them.
It doesn’t matter how good your product or service is if you can’t help your prospect make an emotional and intellectual connection to take ownership of their decision.
What are you thoughts and experiences?

Very interesting article. I don’t know if I buy every point, but there are some great nuggets here. I love the quote “Burning people out is not a survival strategy.”
So what does this all mean?
Even though this article is aimed at the corporate world, there are obviously huge implications for the small business and entrepreneurial folks. Massive societal growth in networking, collaborating and coaching… some of my favorite pastimes… will lead to better decision-making skill and helping and service attitudes – which also will lead to more viral marketing, affiliate marketing and joint ventures between companies offering their products and services to the same target markets.
For those of us already doing the solopreneur gig, we have a headstart. But we need to keep learning, growing and staying ahead of the curve.
And… Don’t miss tomorrow’s FREE TELECLASS to start this new world process: http://idealprospect.eventbrite.com – better networking, marketing and sales success for eveyone!

If you’re looking for a way to weather the economic downturn, the first thing you need to do is realize that it’s a permanent climate change, not a passing storm.

“Create Your Ideal Prospect”
- How good are you at getting customers from networking events, online forums, email campaigns and other prospect contact situations?
- Could you increase your sales effectiveness if you knew exactly what to say, how to say it, what to expect, how to follow up – and put it into the “Prospect Success Formula?”
Most of us entrepreneurs, small biz and sales professionals have several missed opportunities every day, because we aren’t taking our cues from the people we meet and talk to, are not properly positioning ourselves, or are spending too much time and energy focusing on the wrong aspects our dialogs.
And when we do recognize these opportunities, we often let fear and lack of preparation get in the way of really taking advantage. I know I have encountered the sleazy sales person or annoying pitch-happy networker when I’ve been out at events. I’ve also gotten introduction emails from unknown or vaguely known people that make my stomach turn. I don’t want to come off that way to others, and I want to be ethical, moral and helpful with my networking, marketing and sales presentations.
“Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.”
This means that we create our own luck. And when you work for yourself, the importance of this cannot be stressed enough. People don’t succeed with their business just because of luck – especially in this economic environment. You have to be prepared.
And here’s your opportunity to start that preparation, easily and enjoyably.
During this free teleclass, you will:
- Discover the 4 easy steps to Create Your Ideal Prospect
- Learn how fashion your “pitch” so it’s exciting, interesting and relevant – whether this is your networking “elevator pitch”, an online introduction or the turning point in casual conversation
- Know how to use the “Three Eyes” to organically grow people’s interest and get them excited about what you have to offer, so they are ready to say ‘yes’ before you have even asked for a sale
- Turn a skill that you mastered at age two (and drove your parents crazy) into the most valuable sales tool you can ever use
- Find out why businesses are growing at breakneck speeds on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Ning and other social networks, and how you can get in on this too
- And do all these ethically, morally and in a way that makes you feel really good that you are helping others while growing your business!
Please join me on Wednesday, Feb 25 at 9:30am CT for this exciting live workshop that will take what you already know, combine it with new insight and give you superior networking, marketing and sales results!
Here is the link to register: http://idealprospect.eventbrite.com
And… for those that are on the live call, I will be giving a free bonus you will not want to miss, and a very special prize for one lucky winner!
All the best,
Jason
P.S. Don’t miss this one! If you want to explode your sales, and even if you aren’t 100% sure you’ll be able to make it, there will be follow up from the event that you won’t want to miss! http://idealprospect.eventbrite.com

I have just read several blogs that deal with all these topics. Some were suggestions, some were rants, and others were just ideas to help others with sales.
I am a huge believer in networking and “mutually beneficial marketing”! I write articles, give teleclasses and live seminars. These are all forms of marketing and gaining exposure, but the goal isn’t to sell someone on something, but rather to provide useful, insightful info from my own experiences.
And now I am benefitting from the social networking arena – mostly Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Meetup and Ning – where they can all come together. So here is my take:
Successful online networking is not much different than in-person networking: Build your personal and business brand into a cohesive message and attractive experience.
The key to great networking is to develop relationships by:
• Connecting
• Finding common ground
• Being service oriented
• Providing great value – resources, content, ideas or connections
By doing all these, people can get to know you and at the same time enhance themselves and their business, while you expect nothing in return.
And the key to turning people off right away and therefore NEVER being able to make a sale:
• Beat them over the head with your sales pitch
People need to know, like and trust you.
Helping others without expectation is the easiest way to get that accomplished. Plus, others will be drawn to you as you truly are, not as some marketing guru wrote webpage copy to “spin” the real you. This starts off the relationship on the right foot, as people will know what to expect from you.
These are my philosophies, and they have worked very well. Here are two recent articles about online and offline networking strategies and skills here:
“10 Holiday Networking Tips”
www.tinyurl.com/Networking10Tips
“How can I use Twitter to draw business to my website?”
www.tinyurl.com/7dpqrm
Good luck, and please feel free to connect so we can help each other.
All the best,
Jason
