5 Tips to Avoid Entrepreneurial Burnout

Posted by distinctivecoaching on May 21, 2009

Avoiding burnout for us entrepreneurs is key to having a strong, thriving business and happy life:

1.) Create your vision fully – List all the details, all the motivators and consequences of not attaining the vision

2.) Strategize your actions and make sure they are inspired actions – Productivity steps that energize and excite you. Don’t get bogged down with the little things that you don’t really enjoy. There is no one way to accomplish something; there are usually MANY ways. Work with someone to find out what those are, and how to get them done.

3.) Surround yourself with positive people and minimize time with energy draining people.

4.) Take time for yourself everyday, or in crunch time, at the very least every week. Do those things that relax you – read the morning paper in peace, have a cup of tea on the patio, walk, jog or bike for 30 minutes. Take a little time out of your day to refresh your mind and body. For me, bike riding on long trails is when I get the most relaxation, a good workout and fantastic business brainstorming, energy and motivation!

5.) And lastly, don’t go it alone. Work with others and get outside support. You’re not in it alone, and everyone benefits when we work together.

The End is Near (of the Indurtial Age) – “Get Out of the Training Business”

Posted by distinctivecoaching on February 24, 2009

Very interesting article. I don’t know if I buy every point, but there are some great nuggets here.  I love the quote “Burning people out is not a survival strategy.”

So what does this all mean?

Even though this article is aimed at the corporate world, there are obviously huge implications for the small business and entrepreneurial folks.  Massive societal growth in networking, collaborating and coaching… some of my favorite pastimes… will lead to better decision-making skill and helping and service attitudes – which also will lead to more viral marketing, affiliate marketing and joint ventures between companies offering their products and services to the same target markets.

For those of us already doing the solopreneur gig, we have a headstart. But we need to keep learning, growing and staying ahead of the curve.

And… Don’t miss tomorrow’s FREE TELECLASS to start this new world process: http://idealprospect.eventbrite.com – better networking, marketing and sales success for eveyone!

“Get Out of the Training Business”  –  Jay Cross

The dawn of a new age

If you’re looking for a way to weather the economic downturn, the first thing you need to do is realize that it’s a permanent climate change, not a passing storm.

What we are experiencing today is fundamental. The industrial age is in its death throes, making way for the unfolding of the network age…

Q: Will achievement of your goals guarantee happiness?

Posted by distinctivecoaching on October 27, 2008

Hello MVPF Members,

This is a  very interesting question and exercise! (See oringal post by Vincent below)

I think that we each have our own goals, and looking to others that have achieved MY goals to see if they are happy would be interesting and helpful, but also not necessarily directly indicative of the “happiness effect” of those goals unless you also ask WHY they wanted to accomplish and what they would get out of attaining those goals.

Example:
I am considering climbing to the top of the Sears Tower, and I ask others who have done it to see if it made them happy.

Joe finished the ordeal and is extremely happy.  Jennifer did it and is disappointed.  Jack completed it and is very unhappy.

Now, how does that help me if I don’t go further and ask why they attempted the climb?  You see, Joe did it to get in better shape and ended up losing weight, having stronger muscles and a leaner build. Jennifer did it because the elevator was out of order and felt she had no other choice to get to the top.  Jack thought it would bring him fame and fortune, but no one cared.

I think it’s very important to ask yourself WHY you want to attain the goals you have set out for yourself, and how accomplishing them will positively impact your life.  Then dig very deep and see if those accomplishments and those impacts really do have a “cause and effect” relationship – or are they just correlated but maybe not directly, or is there a missing link in between that is necessary?

Many people assume that attaining broadly-termed career, business or financial “success” will make them happy.  This usually is true if you take the time necessary to determine your motivations, actions and results.

I work with small business owners, entrepreneurs and sales professionals to dig much deeper to define exactly what kind of success will make them happy, what the positive impacts are of attaining it, and what the negative implications will be if they don’t. Then we create a plan that is individually inspiring and motivating for them to get there. We figure out how they can use the strengths and skills that they have to do the things they enjoy doing that will lead them to those ultimate goals.

So I agree with Vincent that is a great idea to really take a closer look at your goals and see if they will truly make you happier, and use your network of friends and family to help you find those answers.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss these ideas further, please contact me and befriend me on Facebook and Twitter.

Everyone have a great Monday and a STRONG week!  :)

Best,
Jason

Brainstorming Your Career and Business

If Goals Are The Answer, Why Are Your Friends Who’ve Achieved Your Goal Unhappy?

Posted by: “Vincent Wright” MyLinkedinPowerForum@gmail.com   linkedinrecruiter

Sun Oct 26, 2008 5:14 pm (PDT)

Most of us who’ve been attentive to our coaches, counselors, teachers,
preachers, and consultants have been at one time or another told something
like, “You’ve got to set goals in order to get what you want.”

And while I, too, believe that you have to set goals if you want to get
something out of life, I believe there’s a critically important problem with
overly focusing on goals: goals don’t guarantee happiness.

If you think they do, then answer this: “If goals are the answer to
happiness, why are so many of your friends who’ve achieved your goals,
who’ve achieved the very things you want, still depressed – in spite of
having achieved goals which would “MAKE you” happy?

As an exercise: 1.) Think about your goals. 2.) Think about your network of
friends. 3.) Ask yourself have any of the friends in your network achieved
your goals. 4.) For those who have achieved the goals you’re striving to
achieve, are they happy? 5. ) If they are happy, check in with them to see
if it was the goals alone which made them happy. 6.) If they are not happy,
ask them how is it that achieving all that they’ve achieved, the house, the
car, the spouse, the children, the income, the success is not making them
happy?

And this too: Haven’t you achieved some of your most ardent goals? Were
you always happy after achieving them?

Thanks, and Keep STRONG!!

Tip on “Next steps to keep action moving forward”

Posted by distinctivecoaching on October 16, 2008

Whether you are talking to a prospect, client, or partner, strive to keep the action plan and accountability in motion.

Always provide that person with what to expect next and when to expect it. And, ask questions so you know the same from them.

So much excitement, so little time! :) Keeping my mind on business and getting ready for a “last hurrah” in Mexico

Posted by distinctivecoaching on September 22, 2008

Yep — it’s time again for the 50 mile Rosarito – Ensenada bike ride on Saturday, in MEXICO!!!

This will be my third time participating in the ride (over the last four years, I skipped 2006).  I’ve been training for it, slowly, over the summer.  I hit 50 miles this past Saturday and felt pretty good afterwards.  The toughest part is that 50 miles here is not like 50 miles there.  I don’t have a realistic way here in Chicago in September to train for the grueling uphill climbs and intense heat and sun beating down there in Mexico.  But other than that, I am ready and really excited!

If you check out the website for the ride, you will notice that this is the LAST RIDE for this historic 29-year, semi-annual ride.  I am very sad for that, and I hope that the decision to cancel future rides will be reversed once the economy and travel business pick back up.  I can only assume this is what has led to low participation.

But it got me thinking…

What would you do if you found out that your business only had a year left, then it was being “canceled”?  Would you give up and just relax, maybe not even show up for work?  Would you “train” even harder to make sure the last hurrah was a huge success?  Would you protest, organize and try to save it?

It’s not a perfect analogy, because I didn’t create nor run the Rosarito ride, but it has been something over the past four years that I have enjoyed looking forward to, and training for each year.  And now that this might be (I can’t even bring myself to say “it will be”) the last time I will get to do this, I have even more enthusiasm and excitement to make it a great ride and vacation.

What if we looked at each opportunity in our business as the last time to do it?  The last time to make a great networking contact; the last time to get in front of a room full of people and provide outstanding information, direction and service; the last time to be of tremendous value to a client…?  How would you approach these “last times” – business as usual or very differently?  Then the obvious question becomes, why not approach every opportunity, interaction and deal as if it were your last?

Hmmmm…………..

Huge tip on accountability and achievement…

Posted by distinctivecoaching on September 12, 2008

I just heard a great tip on how to start your goals off in the right mindset:

Phrase your goals in the present, not in the future.  For example, “I am going to double my revenue this year” places the action and the end result both in the future, and subconsciously puts your accountability and commitment in the future as well, as something you can figure out later.

However, by stating “I am doubling my revenue this year,” you are telling yourself that you ARE in the process.  And even if you feel that this is not true, it really is.  Just by writing down a goal, you are taking the necessary first step to accomplish it.

To sum up, switch “I am going to” to “I am”, and you’ll be in a better place to make much more happen.

Best,
Jason
